user interface:

The audience for this web site was for family and friends of baby Evan. The UI had to be simple and easy to use.

lessons learned:

Providing a web site like this to friends and family members is a great way of keeping everyone in touch with what is going on when someone you care about has a baby or any life event. Being able to share photos, videos, and news to grandparents and great grandparents made this a great project to work on. Knowing that the family and friends looked at the web site, subscribed to the blog, and could comment on anything made for a really neat concept to many who are not familiar with blogs and online communities.

random thoughts:

Within minutes of showing one of the content owners the WordPress interface used to edit and create posts and pages, she had posts posted and had no problem understanding how to add new content. WordPress is great!

user interface:

The user interface for this web site was designed by Magnus himself - he wanted a clean minimal design which works well with the content he plans to put on his web site. He provided mockups of front page and a few other non-standard pages and from that I produced the HTML and CSS.

lessons learned:

This was my project working with someone from another country. Overall, working with someone in a far off land is not too much different than working with any other of my remote clients - clear communication and patience are still the main ingredients to a good working relationship. I also learned how to successfully wire money through our banks and through Western Union.

random thoughts:

I look forward to Magnus posting more content - as he is an amazing photographer and his music and film choices are top notch.

technologies used:

XHTML, CSS, Apache SSI, PhotoShop Elements

user interface:

This web site is for the University of Chicago’s Office of Clinical Research. This web site is based on a template provided to me by the University of Chicago (in order for their web presence to have consistency).

lessons learned:

This project scope did not include any database work or scripting language programming so I had to find a creative way to manage almost 100 pages. I ended up using Server Side Includes technology which allowed me to “reference” common files with a server call. All common text on this web site (header, navigation, side links, footer) are in master files making updating the web site much easier.

random thoughts:

I have been creating dynamic web sites for the last couple years and the thought of having almost a 100 static pages made me a little uneasy, but the content owners are so happy to have anything. This web site is a great step into having a web presence, and the content will prove useful to many faculty and staff members at the University of Chicago, so even though it is not something I would normally work on, I am proud to be a part of this project.
