TIME Inc Techland (VIP WordPress Theme)

url: http://www.techland.com/

TIME

SDAC Inc. provided:

  • XHTML/CSS programming
  • WordPress theme creation
  • Custom PHP programming
  • Custom jQuery programming

technologies used:

XHTML, CSS, WordPress, PHP, jQuery

front end:

TIME Inc provided the PSD mockups for the site and I provided them with a finished CSS/XHTML/PHP WordPress theme.

back end:

This was one of the most complicated sites I have worked on to date. There are numerous custom admin features that allows the client to easily change, update and manipulate content. A number of custom fields also gives the client the ability to mark and then display custom content types. There are a number of custom functions on every page view that pulls in content dynamically and displays it depending on the page view.

lessons learned/random thoughts:

Overall – this was an awesome project to work on and I look forward to working with TIME Inc. on more projects in the future.

Carnival Cruise Lines Press Room Blog (VIP WordPress Theme)

url:http://carnivalpressroom.wordpress.com/

Carnival

SDAC Inc. provided:

  • XHTML/CSS programming/cleanup
  • WordPress theme customization/adjustments
  • Custom PHP programming

technologies used:

XHTML, CSS, WordPress, PHP, WordPress VIP Hosting

front end:

I had done some work with this client previously and the theme needed for this site was very similar to the theme for the other site but with some slight modifications.

back end:

For the other Carnival theme, I used a third party theme to start with (Carnival provided). Since there were a lot of customizations on the backend needed, I ended up rebuilding the theme, stripping a lot of unused functions out, adding a lot more admin panels for easy content manipulation, and focusing on giving the client full control of their content. There are several custom functions in place with this site (featured box (can either be video, slideshow, or single image), sidebar widgets, custom admin panels to control almost all images, logos, and text.

lessons learned/random thoughts:

It is almost always easier and more efficient to work with something that you built than to try and troubleshoot as long as you are committed to simplicity and documentation – and I will be happy to continually develop this theme.

Bliss Beauty Blog (VIP WordPress Theme)

url:http://blog.blissworld.com/

Bliss

SDAC Inc. provided:

  • XHTML/CSS programming
  • WordPress theme
  • Custom PHP programming

technologies used:

XHTML, CSS, WordPress, PHP, WordPress VIP Hosting

front end:

I was given a Photoshop mockup of the site and created the CSS/XHTML based on that. The site used design elements I had personally used in the past so it was quite easy to implement (rounded corner boxes, beautiful quotes, etc).

back end:

I created two custom WordPress widgets so they could easily control all their content and easily change it on a regular basis.

lessons learned/random thoughts:

It was a pleasure working with Bliss to put this together and I look forward to working with them in the future.

Macleans Web Site (WordPress VIP CMS)

url:http://www.macleans.ca/

Macleans

SDAC Inc. provided:

  • XHTML/CSS programming
  • WordPress CMS/theme
  • Custom PHP programming
  • Custom AJAX functionality

technologies used:

XHTML, CSS, WordPress, WordPress.com VIP Hosting , PHP, jQuery

front end:

I was given an existing theme to modify and build upon for this site. We used the Macleans colors, logos, and other custom features such as a slideshow, carousel, and other user interface addtions.

back end:

I implemented Jappler Menus (my personal creation) for their navigation, used AJAX and a custom WordPress query to build the featured stories slideshow, more AJAX for the carousel in the middle of the page, and a number of other custom WordPress functions/plugins to make this site as dynamic and simple to maintain and grow.

lessons learned/random thoughts:

This site was a lot of fun to build.

TIME Inc – Real Clear Politics WordPress Theme/Migration

url: http://realclearpolitics.blogs.time.com/

Time - Real Clear Politics

SDAC Inc. provided:

  • XHTML/CSS programming
  • Moveable Type to WordPress Migration
  • WordPress theme
  • Custom PHP programming

technologies used:

XHTML, CSS, Moveable Type, WordPress, WordPress.com (Hosting), PHP

front end:

I used the existing TIME Inc. Moveable Type templates for the site above and from those I created WordPress templates that would display everything so that the readers would not know there was any difference on the backend. I also tightened up the CSS to make sure load time would be reduced.

back end:

It was very important to the editors at TIME that every content area of this site could be easily modified at any time using the WordPress admin. Because of this, I worked with them to make sure they had control of each section by using as many of the WordPress functions, backend admin areas, and sidebar widgets as possible.

lessons learned/random thoughts:

This was my second Moveable Type theme migration for them and it went very smoothly. (WordPress VIP hosting migrated the data).

TIME Inc – Moveable Type to WordPress Blog Migrations

url: Mutiple TIME Inc. Blogs (See Below)

Time - Blog Migration

SDAC Inc. provided:

  • XHTML/CSS programming
  • Moveable Type to WordPress Migration
  • WordPress theme
  • Custom PHP programming

technologies used:

XHTML, CSS, Moveable Type, WordPress, WordPress.com (Hosting), PHP

front end:

I used the existing TIME Inc. Moveable Type templates for the sites above and from those I created WordPress templates that would display everything so that the readers would not know there was any difference on the backend.

back end:

The templates are used across multiple TIME Inc. blogs and have custom functionality that allows them to be flexible enough for customizations across the sites.

lessons learned/random thoughts:

Creating a theme that would be used on several sites took some creative thinking and careful execution. This was an interesting and fun migration. (WordPress VIP hosting migrated the data).
