The client came with a basic layout and all the artwork finished and wanted to me to build a WordPress theme out of it. The layout is very clean and minimal which I really enjoy.

This was a very straightforward build – no fancy custom functionality – but I was able to help out with some of the Apache difficulties they were having which was a fun change of pace.

The client approached me with a table layout that they wanted turned into a CSS/XHTML layout for their company blog. I also re-created their javascript menu that was over 300 lines of code and reduced it down to only a few lines of javascript with some CSS.

back end:

This was a very straightforward build – no fancy functionality. There are only a few plugins that the client wanted and the theme is very lightweight and flexible for both pages and blog posts.

I wanted to create something that was bright and based on the client’s favorite baseball team’s colors – the Mets. The client wanted bits and pieces of his site to look like a few existing web sites that he really liked, so I used elements (some from SDAC) and put it all together.

lessons learned:

Do not be afraid of bright colors – not everyone likes my more usual calmer, softer colors.

random thoughts:

The client has a great idea and I look forward to reading his blog on a daily basis.

  • Web Hosting

technologies used:

XHTML, CSS, WordPress, PHP,

user interface:

The audience for this web site was for family and friends of baby Evan. The UI had to be simple and easy to use.

lessons learned:

Providing a web site like this to friends and family members is a great way of keeping everyone in touch with what is going on when someone you care about has a baby or any life event. Being able to share photos, videos, and news to grandparents and great grandparents made this a great project to work on. Knowing that the family and friends looked at the web site, subscribed to the blog, and could comment on anything made for a really neat concept to many who are not familiar with blogs and online communities.

random thoughts:

Within minutes of showing one of the content owners the WordPress interface used to edit and create posts and pages, she had posts posted and had no problem understanding how to add new content. WordPress is great!

What you see here is about the 5th design I produced in a matter of two or three months. I spend many hours looking at some of the best designed web sites on the web and taking note of each part I liked and did not like. Since blogging has become so popular, web sites have starting mimicking the general blog layout. Experienced (my target audience) web surfers’ eyes are trained to look for navigation at the top of the page, the body of the page in the middle, and static links to be available on the left side of the screen. I added the idea of having section specific information available on the right hand side. The year 2004 was the year of the blog for me.

lessons learned:

Even if I QA my work on Safari, Netscape, FireFox, and Mac IE 5.x with code that is validated by the W3C, it is inevitable that IE for Windows will still display things different. It is all about learning CSS tricks and being patient. May hours went into the CSS, but at the end, it is a great feeling to know it works on 99% of the browsers. I also learned the valuable lesson of using multiple style sheets to combat some CSS issues in IE.

random thoughts:

Jappler.com is a return to one of my favorite colors to work with: grey. I like to work with grey because, without bright and interesting colors, you are forced to be creative and focus on other aspects of the design. I think this design displays clean lines, clean code, and hopefully interesting content.
